MUSIC & CHRISTIANITY

Music as a Reflection of Creation

Music is one of the many gifts God has given to humanity, like art or food.  Psalm 19 shows us that God reveals Himself in creation, allowing us to enjoy Him in these gifts. Music, both Christian and non-Christian, has the ability to reflect God’s goodness. We just need to be wise with what we listen to.

Discernment in Music Choices

Not all secular music is harmful, but Christians should practice discernment. Some songs celebrate love, joy, or justice—values that are consistent with the Bible. However, music that promotes immorality or sinful behaviour is spiritually harmful and should be avoided (Philippians 4:8).

Guarding Your Heart and Mind

Secular music can influence your heart and mind, either positively or negatively. Proverbs 4:23 reminds us to guard our hearts diligently. We need to be aware of what we are allowing into our lives through music, as it can shape our thoughts, attitudes, and behaviours.

What Does It Glorify?

Before listening to a song, ask yourself:

Does it glorify God, or does it lead me away from Him?

Music that promotes selfishness, impurity, or violence doesn't reflect the holiness God calls us to.  Look for music that uplifts, encourages, and brings peace (Colossians 3:16).

Living with Purpose

Ultimately, as Christians, our lives should reflect Christ in all things, including what we listen to.  Whether it's secular or Christian music, choose songs that help you live purposefully for God's glory (1 Corinthians 10:31). What we consume shapes who we become.  Make the conscious decision to choose things that point you closer to Jesus.
